ARMSTRONG RELIABILITY APPRECIATED AT ST BENET’S HALL, OXFORD
Nearly eight years ago, the laundry at St Benet’s Hall in Oxford was equipped by Armstrong Commercial Laundry Systems with two Schulthess washer extractors and a Huebsch stack dryer. One of the washers reached the end of its life recently – but up until that date, according to Mike Davey, Catering Manager for the college, none of the machines had ever broken down, and the other machines are still going strong. He has now replaced the machine with the latest Schulthess 7kg model which he is absolutely delighted with.
St Benet’s is a small, Catholic theological college housing about 25 students and monks. Outside of term time the hall is used for functions and conferences. The laundry is operated during the daytime by two housekeepers who handle all bedding, towels, kitchen clothes etc together with table linen for functions. In the evening it can be used free of charge by the residents to do their own personal laundry. The equipment is likely to be in use for at least seven hours at day, and quite often this can extend to up to 15 hours. “The reliability of this equipment is exceptional. It’s amazing that the machines can work that hard for 7+ years and never break down once”, Mike Davey said. “I wish I could have them for home!”
The Schulthess 8120 is a superbly engineered Swiss machine offering an exceptional range of features and programmes. These include a high extraction speed resulting in only 43% residual moisture, so saving a great deal on drying time and drying energy costs.
LAUNDRY EQUIPMENT FROM ARMSTRONG PROVIDES RELIABLE SERVICE IN BUSY NEW CARE HOME
Nicholas House is a purpose-built care home for 30 residents in Burnham, near Slough run by the Abbeyfield (Maidenhead) Society. It was opened in December 2011, and the laundry was equipped by Armstrong Commercial Laundry Equipment with two Primus 13kg capacity washer extractors, a Huebsch 15.9kg tumble dryer and a GMP 1600mm ironer.
The laundry handles all the dirty washing generated by the home including bed and table linen, towels, kitchen clothes and all the residents’ personal clothing. It is operated by four housekeepers. Jill Wheeler, one of the housekeepers, told us, “The home generates so much laundry that it is operating at least seven hours a day, seven days a week – sometimes longer.” All the flatwork is ironed – everything from bed linen to tea towels. Jill told us that the equipment is pretty foolproof and easy to use, but all the housekeepers are trained to make sure they use the correct programmes which of course include a thermal disinfection cycle.
We asked Shirley Fairley, manager of the home, about the reliability of the equipment and Armstrong’s service. “Armstrong are very helpful,” she said, “but in fact I don’t think we’ve had to call them out at all as none of the machines have broken down since they were put in.”
MULTIPLE LAUNDERETTE OWNER BUYS ALL HIS DRYERS FROM ARMSTRONG
Ivan Gaetan of Central Wash is a highly experienced London launderette owner, now owning four launderettes, one of which he has been running for 25 years. The Central Wash sites are in Crawford Street W1, Queensway, Star Street Paddington and Moscow Road Bayswater.
The Queensway one (photographed) is reputedly the oldest coin-operated launderette in the UK, having been on the site since 1949! These launderettes service a varied clientele including students, young professionals and tourists. They are all staffed right through opening hours offering service washes, a duvet service and dry cleaning.
Mr Gaetan is delighted with his Speed Queen dryers supplied by Armstrong. Mostly he buys the Twinstar® 2 x 30lb capacity stacked tumble dryers, gas heated. “Up until about seven years ago I was using dryers from another supplier”, he told us, “but they were a nightmare – they only seemed to last a few months before they started breaking down all the time.
So I switched to Armstrong and the Speed Queens and I’ve never looked back – I just wish I’d found them earlier. They are extremely reliable – hardly ever breaking down. If they do, it’s usually something simple like a belt which I can fix myself, but even on the odd occasion when I need an engineer to call they will often come the same day, or certainly the next day.”
ARMSTRONG AGAIN FOR LERWICK FISH TRADERS
When it was time for some of the Armstrong laundry equipment to be replaced, after 15 years of hardworking performance, Armstrong again was successful. The new equipment included two 23 kg washer-extractors and a Huebsch 35 lb tumble dryer.
Janis Crerar is responsible for the laundry as well as general cleaning. She says ‘we have dedicated the new Armstrong equipment, both the washers and the dryer to the high risk work and they are wonderful. They are better, quicker and more efficient than the ones they replaced and we never have to do a re-wash. Our engineers look after them and when we need spares such as filters, Armstrong’s service is first class.’
ARMSTRONG RELIABILITY AGAIN FOR BUCKREDDAN CARE CENTRE
Reliability has always been a priority for the Buckreddan Care Centre in Kilwinning, Ayrshire. Armstrong supplied the original laundry in 1986. In 2004 demand for Buckreddan’s high quality care led the company to add another unit and now in 2012 the operation cares for 122 residents and has a nursery looking after more than 60 children.
The laundry is operated by two members of staff and runs seven days a week, nearly 24 hours a day. ‘Support from Armstrong has always been excellent’ says Domestic Supervisor Maureen Donaldson so when the original Huebsch tumble dryers eventually had to be replaced, it was no surprise that Buckreddan opted for two more of the same – gas heated Huebsch 35lb tumble dryers.

NEW DRYERS FROM ARMSTRONG CUT COSTS
A new range of tumble dryers has been announced by Armstrong Commercial Laundry Systems. The new Huebsch range incorporates Over-drying Prevention Technology (OPT). This not only cuts energy costs but also reduces drying time, so improving productivity.
The final moisture content for each cycle is fixed by the operator and the OPT system delivers it with the optimum balance of heat input and cycle time. Sophisticated sensors deliver a constant stream of dryness data to the control system. The dryer uses high temperature heat at the beginning of the drying cycle because wet work can handle more heat than dry fabrics. As the load dries, the heat input is progressively reduced.
The outcome is a win-win combination of lower energy costs and shorter drying times. Additionally, preventing over-drying reduces stress on the fabrics, thereby extending their life. The new dryers are available in a full range of sizes to suit every application.
