The Laundrette, located in a Cotswold stone building in the attractive market town of Moreton-in-Marsh, is owned by Ted and Carol Sugrue and serves a large resident and tourist community as it is the only launderette in the town, and for many miles around. While the shop has been there since the 1970s, the Sugrues bought the building in 2007 and have carried out major refurbishment work to the launderette, the adjoining shop and developed three beautiful flats for rental above the shops.
Having had considerable problems with their original equipment supplier, particularly on servicing, Mr Sugrue changed over to Armstrong Commercial Laundry Systems from whom he now gets all his equipment. It is serviced by Armstrong’s local engineer and Mr Sugrue told us that he is ‘extremely happy with both the equipment and the service support’. “The machines are really tough and reliable,” he said, “and they need to be! They get some fairly rough treatment”. His washer extractors are all Primus Rigid Mount commercial washers in three sizes – 7kg, 10kg and one recently installed 18kg machine. He has five tumble dryers, the newest of which are two Speed Queen Twinstar stacked dryers each offering two x 20 kg capacities.
The Laundrette’s clientele includes quite a number of local people, some of who use just the dryers in the winter to avoid having wet washing hanging around the house. The town has a thriving tourist business and a number of local B&Bs, tea rooms and holiday cottages use shop for bed and table linen and towels, plus of course the tourists come in for their personal washing. During the winter season several local clubs including Stow Rugby Club and Moreton Rangers Football Club bring in their kit for washing and the Laundrette also handles protective clothing from a local paintballing site and linings and soft furnishings for a large marquee company.
The Laundrette is open from 7am-7pm seven days a week for self service washing and drying and from 8am-5pm Monday to Friday is attended by Diane who has run the business day-to-day for more than 25 years! “Diane knows all there is to know about launderette operation,” Mr Sugrue told us. “She knows all of our regular customers and will do everything she can to make sure they get the best possible service.” Diane offers service washes, a duvet service, an ironing service and also takes in dry cleaning and alterations which are collected and returned to the shop by a local company with an excellent reputation. She told us how much nicer the shop was since the Sugrue’s refurbishment. We found The Laundrette was extremely clean and tidy and had a really warm and friendly atmosphere.
