Xceptional service brings Xceptional growth for X-Press

When Derek Watson and Lynn Gillespie set up X-Press Laundry in West Lothian eight years ago the business started with one 7.5 kg washers, a Speed Queen dryer and a one metre wide ironer. The business has always focused on serving the catering industry, largely via organisations providing a comprehensive range of support services to caterers. X-Press has always worked extremely hard to deliver to the expectations of this demanding market and the business grew rapidly.

Within three years the company had added a 22 kg washer and was working double shifts to cope with the demand. The bottleneck was the ironer. The first machine X-Press bought was inadequate. Derek Watson says ‘our customers’ quality standards are high and so are our productivity standards and the machine didn’t conform to either.’ Then X-Press contacted Armstrong Commercial Laundry Systems.

‘Armstrong’s service and understanding of our requirements was exceptional’ says Derek. X-Press visited a hotel in Hamilton and two professional sites in the south of England to see the Armstrong products in action and talk to their owners. They settled on a LACO 500 3 metre return feed gas heated ironer.

‘The LACO doubled our capacity and still we continued to grow’ says Derek Watson. ‘Then, five years on, we had a fright when our 22 kg washer broke down. We reckoned we needed a similar sized back-up machine. We talked to several suppliers and again when we contacted Armstrong they responded within hours.

The FS23 is an excellent machine and we found it competitively priced. Although we thought we were buying it as a back-up, in fact it has again doubled our capacity. We run it for eight to ten loads a day and we have operated over 500 cycles in the first two months.’ Based on a service ethos that just will not let a customer down, whatever the effort involved, X-Press continues to expand and is now looking for bigger premises.

What our clients say...

  • “Our machines have come from several suppliers – there is a big difference in the standards of support we receive and Armstrong gets 10 out of 10 – their service has been consistently excellent over several years and when you’re as busy as we are, that’s very important.”

    Jacqui Butler

  • “It’s important to get the right equipment for the job, too small and it won’t do it properly, too big and you are wasting money, energy and space. It is also important to deal with a company you trust to supply reliable equipment and give you the support you need. As expected, the installation went smoothly, we have never had the slightest problem and I know Armstrong will deal with it if we do.”

    Colin Farquharson, St Ermin’s Hotel

  • “Our relationship with Armstrong goes back a long way, and they continue to give us excellent service and extremely reliable equipment.”

    Suzy Brandwood, The Elms School

  • “On average the equipment is working 14 hours a day throughout the week.  The new dryers are brilliant, easy to use, efficient and reliable!”

Wendy Clayton, Chepstow Nursing & Care Home

  • “The machines are kept very busy, work well and have been very reliable.”

    Fr Oliver, Douai Abbey

  • “That’s the thing with Armstrong, if you ask for service you get it – quickly.  We know we can rely on them which is really important as the speed and quality of the laundry is vital to the hotel.”

James Suter, The Gliffae Country House Hotel

  • “As before I am delighted with the dryers, they are really efficient and reliable and the customers find them very easy to use.”

    Shaid Aziz, Bright Wash Launderette

  • “We’re delighted with the new dryer. We pride ourselves on a very personal level of care here, keeping up with the laundry and it all coming out looking good is an important aspect of this care and this machine has been excellent since it was installed.”

    Marilyn Collins, Oaklands Care Home
